Dvar Torah: Parashat Toldot

Dvar Torah, Parashat Toldot, Shabbat, November 22, presented by Audrey Berner.

For the last several weeks, Mark and I have been watching a TV show titled “Leverage”. It’s a quirky show about a group of people who work outside the law in efforts to stand up for the “little” people, people who have no leverage. During each episode, the group perform sometimes quite elaborate cons using disguises, role playing, tricks, misdirection and some serious computer hacking skills in order to bring down those who think themselves above the law.

I was reminded of the show as I read Parashat Toldot. Besides the important task of digging wells, Toldot is all about disguises, role playing, tricks and misdirection, though here, the cons are for personal gain. I should point out that many rabbinic interpreters would disagree.

But, allow me to argue my point. Click here to continue.

Thank you to everyone who joined us for our Taste of the Balkans program. This gathering was a wonderful prelude to our upcoming Kabbalat Shabbat Around the World: The Balkans. Together, we explored the flavors and traditions shaped by centuries of cultural exchange — blending Ottoman, Mediterranean, Slavic, Austro-Hungarian, and Middle Eastern influences into a rich, diverse cuisine. A special thank you to David Gerchicoff for helping out and showing us how to roll stuffed vine leaves! Click here for the photo gallery.
